Workshops

The focus of our workshops is to provide people with information, awareness and practical tools on a range of money management topics such as budgeting, managing credit, dealing with debt and understanding consumer rights and responsibilities. Our community education program provides free workshops including:

• Budgeting for Life

Managing money is like any life skill - it takes practice and know how.  The Budgeting for Life workshop is based on a booklet of the same name, produced by Care over 20 years ago. The session is aimed at empowering participants to identify existing skills and to build on these to become more financially resilient.   The topics covered during this session include:

  • understanding your money story

  • tips and strategies for managing money

  • strategies for surviving debt

  • the role of financial counselling and consumer/credit lawyers

  • SMART goals – and much more!

• Understanding Your Consumer Rights and Responsibilities

This session is delivered by one of our Consumer Law Centre Solicitors and if you like the ABC show The Checkout, this workshop is a must.  The topics covered during this session include:

  • your consumer rights, responsibilities and protections

  • owning and buying a car

  • different types of credit and responsible lending

  • relationship debt and financial abuse prevention

• How to Talk About Money with Your Clients

This workshop is designed to assist frontline workers to increase skills and knowledge in supporting clients experiencing financial stress.  The topics covered during this session include:

  • recognising the signs of financial hardship and financial abuse

  • how to help and not hinder when someone is struggling with financial stress

  • understanding the role of financial counsellors and consumer credit lawyers and developing stronger referral pathways.

The education team can deliver any of these sessions at organisations across Canberra.  If you are interested in knowing more about these workshops including our booking system, please contact our education team on 02 6257 1788 or email education@carefcs.org
