Workshops

The focus of our workshops is to provide people with information, awareness and practical tools on a range of money management topics such as budgeting, managing credit, dealing with debt and understanding consumer rights and responsibilities.

Budgeting for life

Managing money is like any life skill - it takes practice and know how.  The Budgeting for Life workshop is based on a booklet of the same name, produced by Care over 20 years ago. The session is aimed at empowering participants to identify existing skills and to build on these to become more financially resilient.   The topics covered during this session include:

  • understanding your money story

  • tips and strategies for managing money

  • strategies for surviving debt

  • the role of financial counselling and consumer/credit lawyers

  • SMART goals – and much more!  

Understanding Your Consumer Rights and Responsibilities

This session is delivered by one of our Consumer Law Centre Solicitors and if you like the ABC show The Checkout, this workshop is a must.  The topics covered during this session include:

  • your consumer rights, responsibilities and protections

  • owning and buying a car

  • different types of credit and responsible lending

  • relationship debt and financial abuse prevention

How to Talk about Money with Your Clients

This workshop is designed to assist frontline workers to increase skills and knowledge in supporting clients experiencing financial stress.  The topics covered during this session include:

  • recognising the signs of financial hardship and financial abuse

  • how to help and not hinder when someone is struggling with financial stress

  • understanding the role of financial counsellors and consumer credit lawyers and developing stronger referral pathways.

Supporting clients if they are struggling with energy

This workshop is designed to assist frontline workers who have clients struggling with energy bills. It is run by Care and Vinnies via the Home Energy Tune-Up initiative
The session aims to give insights into:

  • How energy poverty impacts on vulnerable households 

  • How Vinnies and Care can help your clients manage energy bills and usage

  • ACT Government's energy schemes and rebates available
